The Expression of Time in Amahuaca Switch-Reference Clauses

Many languages of lowland South America mark remoteness distinctions in their TAM systems. In Amahuaca (Panoan; Peru) multiple are made the past and future. I argue that temporal morphemes (TRMs) can be understood as indications event time relative to utterance matrix environments. dependent clauses, however, picture is more complicated. By exploring adjunct switch-reference show TRMs clauses display a previously unreported ambiguity reminiscent ambiguities found with tense.
